Don’t be a home renovation martyr: How to make a kitchen renovation easier on your life
Estimated reading time: 3 minutes
Should you stay or should you go? For kitchen remodels both big and small, the question of how to exist without a fully operational kitchen is an important decision. We have talked before about how long to expect before your custom kitchen is complete, but here are some tips to help make a kitchen renovation easier on your life.
Find space at home
Be prepared for the mess and noise associated with a kitchen renovation. The level of disruptiveness varies based on the renovation and your kitchen designer will be able to help you determine whether you can remain in the home. You may be comfortable creating a make shift kitchen in another part of your house. While a make shift kitchen will never replace the actual thing, by putting together a small area, it will allow you a little peace while your kitchen design team creates your dream kitchen. Put together a folding table, a microwave, and a small fridge (if possible). Keep things simple- find recipes based on a limited number of kitchen appliances and keep only the essentials close at hand. Provided that the remodel allows you to keep a freezer on, preparing and freezing meals ahead of the renovation is an effective way of preparing meals. Biodegradable plates, glasses and cutlery provide an easy alternative to wash up if having access to a sink is a little (or very difficult).
Utilize escape at home
If you decide to remain within the home during the renovations, you may want to try and schedule the project in a timeframe that suits your needs. Summer provides a solution to a variety of problems associated with renovations. Windows can be kept open to allow for airflow, diminishing harsh smells within the home as well as assisting with the dry time. With the warmer weather, even the smallest patio can become a suitable extension to your indoor make shift kitchen. You can rely on the barbeque to cook up a range of meals- from grilled meats and vegetables to baked casseroles.
Pack your bags and go
If the idea of setting up a make shift kitchen sounds less than ideal, you may want to consider packing your bags for the time being. If you’re comfortable with the renovations continuing in your absence, you may want to consider renting a property, staying with friends or family, or even treating yourself to a vacation. With your time away from the renovations, you will still be able to coordinate with your renovator and kitchen designer to make sure everything remains on schedule. By combining vacation time with a stay with friends or family, you may even be able to get a home cooked meal!
The finished product
Whether you need to set up an alternative space, utilise outdoor space, or take yourself far away from the renovations, once your have your dream kitchen all the momentary inconveniences will seem like a distant memory.
